A nite at the races are a great way to raise money for your charity, club, school or society.  A night at the races is also excellent for team building events and even stag nights!

At the start of your event!

At the start of your event you explain to your audience that you use a 'betting tote system' to calculate the winnings in each race.  A betting tote system works by collecting in all of the wagers before the race, a percentage of the income is retained for the charity, club, school or society, and the remainder is divided between the winning betting tote tickets on the night.

The price of the tickets is your decision and depends very much upon your audience.  Remember the higher the betting tote tickets price the bigger the payout to your punters and the greater your nite at the races profits.

Once all of the wagers have been placed the betting tote is closed!!  A member of the audience must then select one of the sealed films which is then shown.  This selection is random so nobody knows which race has been selected or which horse is the winner!!!

The lights go down and the payouts are calculated!

As the lights go down and the MC for the event announces the race and the runners, the betting tote staff calculates the amounts to be paid to the winners and how much is to be retained for the charity, club, school or society.  These calculations are very easy and we include payout calculators in all of our nite at the races to help with this!

After all of the winners have collected their money the tote is re-opened and the whole process is repeated for all of the races you are running.

Its as easy as that to have a nite at the races!!

It's all as easy as that to have a great fun night for your organisation.  It's also a great way to bring your club members together for a highly enjoyable evening's entertainment.

How else can you raise money at you event!

The rest of this site has a lot of hints and tips

Double Card

Our Double Card is another great way to earn some extra money before your event.  This is available from our download section and is ideal for publicising your event, getting your customers involved before the event and encouraging them to turn up on the night.

It's very simple to use.  First you pick a race for double, then decide how much each square will cost (you will see what we mean when you download it!!)  We suggest £1.00.  You then decide how much the charity will keep (there are 56 squares) lets say £16 therefore the winner will receive £40 for their £1.00 bet!  If you fill up the first card quickly you can always select an additional race to have as a double race!!!

It's very easy to do and is free to our customers!

You could even have people selling this on the night of your event for each of your races; it's very easy to do so it's up to you!  Why not position someone where the payouts are made to encourage the winners to part with their winnings!

Good Ideas For Additional Games

You may also wish to have additional fundraising event games taking place on the night.  Here are three that we can recommend.

Winner From Loser

This must be mentioned at the very start of your fund raising event before the start of the first race.

After each race, all of the punters holding winning tickets take them to the pay-out point to receive their betting tote winnings.  All of the losers however, must write their name on the back of the betting slips and put it into a cardboard box (you could position this near the betting tote tellers).

Before the last race takes place, a draw is made and 8 tickets drawn out of the cardboard box.  Those whose names are on the back of the tickets are given a horse in that order.  These are read out over the microphone so that all of the punters know who the lucky 8 people are who have a horse in the last race of your fundraising event.

The race is run and the winner is declared.  This person will receive a prize (either cash or a bottle of drink!)  It's up to you!

The advantage of this great game, is that it not only keeps people interested until the end of the fundraising event, but it keeps the floor clean of all used betting slips and gives the losers an opportunity to win a prize.

Horse Auction

Select a couple of races during the event i.e. the fourth and the last and hold an auction.  Everyone can bid for whichever horse they like and the highest bidder takes the horse.  After the 8 horses have been auctioned, your organisation deducts a percentage i.e. 25%.  The race is run and the balance is paid to the winning owner.

The Raffle Race

This requires the audience to buy tickets for a 'Star Prize'.  From the tickets sold, 8 are drawn out at random and are awarded a horse in the next race.  Whoever owns a winner, then receives a prize.

Other Money Making Ideas

Nite at the races - Race Sponsorship

You can sell race sponsorship for, say, £10.  This could be a pub, restaurant or a local business.

Selling Event Programmes

You can sell programmes on the evening to generate more revenue.

Nite at the races - Horse Sales

Horses can be bought at the event.  After the betting tote is closed, 8 people are welcome to come and buy the horse from the MC for £1 each.  The winner receives £5 and £3 goes towards the funds.  You must sell all 8 horses to justify this.

Sundry Raffles and Tombolas

In between races offers an ideal opportunity for other activities such as tombolas and raffles.  These can contribute to the fun and profit of the event!

Bar and Drink Sales

The bar will have a busy time and, in some instances, the major reason for one of our events, is to boost bar sales.
